Hello people!!
Hope you are all keeping well and safe.
Here we are again, these weeks do fly by. I hope you are getting to draw as many monsters as you can!
So, let’s have a think about drawing monsters shall we. Picasso said “Every Child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist when we grow up. A study by the American Psychological institute done between 1959 and 1964 involving 350 kids found that after 9 or 10 years old our tendency to daydream and wonder declines sharply. That’s depressing.
Kids always draw monsters, superheroes and all sorts of crazy stuff in there early years, it’s wonderful. Due to the frontal cortes not being fully developed, the part that is responsible for rule making in the brain, our thoughts our without inhibition and readily wild thinking! Also, in my opinion and quite a few others, art in schools just does not teach you to let rip. You have to adhere to the self portraits or drawing a still life shoe.

But, drawing monsters you can just abandon all that theory and worry. They are not real let rip. A great example of this is Dave Evries Monster Engine project. He took kids monster drawing s and re painted them as realistic as he could. They are an absolute hoot! Check out some of the images here.
Unfortunately, it’s not a project he has continued. But have a look, they are terrifying an hilarious.
Remember the rules for drawing monsters, the weird and the wonderful!
1. They are not real, so draw them any damn way you want.
2. Forget stuff like anatomy. Who cares.
3. Use any tool and as many as you like as long as it makes an unholy mess.
4. Most importantly, have some bloody great fun!
So, what am I trying to say here? Draw what you damn well want. Make up your own rules. Forget all the how to draw books, you will only get better at YOUR ART the more you do it. Just go for it, make it a habit. Instead of checking your phone for whatever updates you can look at later, grab an art tool and create. Draw every day, even its just for 5 minutes. It does not have to be in a moleskin type journal. It can be on a scrap of paper. Just get some shapes down and have a blast!

The realistic monsters thing reminded me of Patricia Piccinini's freaky sculptures of semi-human...things. https://hosfeltgallery.com/artists/62-patricia-piccinini/
