Monster Rambles 12 The Joy of Black and White
Artwork I have created using my favourite colours
I love to create stuff just in black and white. Imprefer black and white comics, black and white photography and hate it when people attempt to colour black and white movies. The 1957 movie Night of the Demon is one of my all time favourite horror movies and looks spectacular in all its grey tone wonder. Yiu can listen to me talk about it on my podcast if you like.
There is just something so powerful about black and white images, certainly in these days of over saturated computer colouring in movies and comics. No wonder Robert Eggers keeps using it, especially in his movie The Light House. That movie is a textural delight.

I often take some of these images and pop them through the digital box . The things you can do colour wise so easy these days is great, but i don’t think they ever look as good as the original pen andk ink image. It’s certainly more of a challenge to get textures across. Jeffrey Alan Love’s work is the greatest example of that. Also Mike Mignola, Ben Templesmith and the magnificent penwork sketches of Ashley Wood.
Ink, watercolour, acrylic, marker pens and the handy white tippex pen. I use all different kinds of mediums to try and get the right effects, experiment with differents styles and shapes. I think working in black and white frees you up to do that, so you are not worrying about the colour wheel complications.

I did a project over a couple of years called the Ancient Dark , using simple black and white shapes. You can purchase a copy on Amazon or a free digital copy Here.

More importantly, remember the rules for drawing monsters, the weird and the wonderful!
1. They are not real, so draw them any damn way you want.
2. Forget stuff like anatomy. Who cares.
3. Use any tool and as many as you like as long as it makes an unholy mess.
4. Most importantly, have some bloody great fun!
