Guardians Of The Netherworld
You will need a badge from the Substack Gods before travelling on...
Unfortunately, I forgot to scan the black and white version before I added paint. I really like that version!

This was another another one that had been in my sketchbook for a while. I had been looking at the black and white work of death metal master artist Mark Riddick and the infamous Godmachine as inspiration, but still have a way to go to capture that spirit.
I added a watercolour wash once the inks where complete. The red sun was coloured with a alcohol marker. I used some water colour pencil crayon to make the subtle yellow on the beard and hands. I also used a red colour pencil for the red markings at the bottom of the image. I did not like how these turned out and pretty much obliterated these in the digital version.
I have started using the Affinity Photo software a lot more and it recently had a major upgrade. It looks like Clip Studio is going to a Subscription service with its next major upgrade and I already pay the Adobe subscription. Affinity has a one off fee for Publisher, Designer and Photo licence, something they are pushing hard. Hopefully this means they will stick with it . Affinity has a few issues ( not being able to scan directly into the software seems the strangest!!) but I am enjoying the experience. The brushes are great from True Grit Texture and it certainly seems to have everything I need at the moment. I am trying to build myself up to abandoning PS altogether . I haven’t used it for a while now, so maybe I just need to cut the rope. Fear is getting the better of me!!
I’m still very much torn regarding my digital work. What I really need to do is concentrate on the one software and bend it as much as I can for my own needs. I’m not sure I have found my place with digital yet, even after all this time. I realised I keep flitting between software, Clip Studio Paint, Adobe and Affinity. I’m no expert and probably only use 20 percent of the capabilities of PS but its the one I have used the most. It’s hard to drag yourself away from some thing I have used so much in the past. I have still to dig deep into the clip studio software, but like what it produces. My Death Trench image was created using it and I was really happy with that.
I have avoided Procreate . Mainly, I don’t have an Ipad! More technology is the last thing I need. I see a lot of people using it and have tried. It is another software to learn and life is becoming to short!
So , going forward, my digital work will be created with the Affinity Suite exclusively. Id love to know what you think of Affinity , if you use it , and how you think my work looks. Let me know in the comments.
There has been a lot of shouting about the new “Badge “ system here on Substack. Personally , I am not a fan. I think it may create a “ us and them” scenario that I hate about Social Media at the best of time, thus my move here. I hope they see sense but I doubt it. I will certainly stick around as I really enjoy the experience on Substack so far. Let’s see if it changes! I will always keep this free as I enjoy sharing my work and ideas all under one place. The best way to support is to buy my work. Admittedly, I have not got much for sale at the moment. Photographing and listing take so much time and I’d rather be making the stuff!!! I promise I will get more up in the next week. Hopefully some will sell ,otherwise it’ll be my normal trip to the recycle centre. I have so much stuff sat in drawers I usually have a clear out every year.
I do have a Ko-Fi account if anyone wants to buy a brew or a beer, but not advertised much. I will add the donate button in the future if anyone would like to support my work that way. I’m still musing the idea of a Patreon, but just think that will add to more admin and taking me away from my work. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Anyway, thanks for stopping by and taking a look and the time to read my ramblings. I’m off to take Milo Merrylegs for a walk, he is staring at me with intent and the weather is unusually good in the UK for this time of year!
Thanks as always!
