Enter The Batman
Not the kind of art I would normally produce...
When I was a kid, I loved superheroes. We picked up random Marvel and DC comics from local newsagents. The issue numbers varied as there was no real distribution in the UK for US comics. UK comics tended to be humour based ( Beano , Dandy etc) or War themed ( Battle, Warlord). Most of the Superhero stuff we saw came through the TV and cinema thanks to the Adam West Batman Show Spiderman tv show ,The Hulk tv show and Christopher Reeve Superman.
However, the Comic Boom in the late 1980’s and the opening of more high street Comic Shops in the UK opened up a whole new world. One of these was when I picked up Frank Millers Dark Night Returns Issue one. It blew my mind and I became a massive Batman fan. He’s still my all time favourite today, even though I don’t really read mainstream comics anymore. I wrote an article all about why here. So, on a whim, I decided to try and dabble in drawing the Bat’s again.
I really enjoyed creating these images. The shapes and shadows of batman are great to work with. Apart from Miller’s work Mike Mignola’s Batman renditions are certainly my favourite. I even have the Mignola Batman Black and White Statue on my shelf.

Obviously, as my work leans towards the darker side of the palette, Batman suits my style much better than Superman or Thor. I may get away with Daredevil or possibly , at a push, Wolverine? Something I will have to think about!
The digital versions have been created with Affinity Photo 2, which I’m now trying to stick to as my main software.
Anyway, hope you like them, let me know. I’d love to know peoples thoughts!
Thanks for stopping by, stay safe!
