Welcome to the Doomlands Inn
The ongoing creations of dansmonsters and other good stuff..
As the Great Obi Wan would say Well Hello There!
For those who have followed me from other parts of the Digital Realm, mainly Instagram I suppose, thanks for coming along. For those who are new to the Dansmonsters world, thanks for taking a chance!
So, what will I be doing here?
Oh, I have such sights to show you!!
I have decided this is the place where I will post my latest work, sharing my process, videos, sketches, tools and other such nonsense. I love sharing my work and thought, after much deliberation , this would be the place to do it. Although you will see some work on Instagram etc, this is where I'm going to put the good stuff!
Let me explain…….
I’m no fan of Social Media. However, I cannot deny it’s been helpful in reaching and connecting with other like minded folk, that sat at in a pub reading a Guy N Smith book never did. I joined Facebook early on, had a Tumblr site, created various web incarnations, written blogs, Twitter and of course Instagram. Instagram was initially the best for me. However, the damn thing has just gotten worse over time. I found myself sweating over not posting enough or the right content. Then stressing about what to post, what was my audience, what did they like, what hashtags. I think it culminated in the Sketch Cards of Doom series of Reels I created . This was a reaction to video content being the the next best thing. So, I had to do something!!
Christ, it nearly killed me!! The 50 videos I made certainly boosted my profile and I felt that thrilling buzz as more likes and follows preceded. However, this started to fade as soon as I stopped. I needed to take a break . The thing is , I then worried about it. What should I do next? How can I ride this wave? What do I need to create to grab peoples attention? Aghhh!!!
I did come to a dramatic conclusion.
I was going to do bugger all. I’d had enough.
The fact of the matter was, I love creating stuff . Instagram was taking that fun away and giving me a serious case of art heartburn. I don’t always want to draw. It’s all about the image with Instagram. I like to write crappy stories. I like telling people about stupid books I’ve read and daft films I’ve watched. I like sharing my crappy ideas without worrying about people liking it or not. I really enjoyed writing my book reviews ( I used to work in a bookshop) and my blog posts. I really just want to do some stuff for the heck of it now. Frankly though what was the point. I may as well just keep doing stuff than shove it in the fire. At least it was good for something.
I messaged Patrick Sparrow about advice on creating comics and art in general just as a matter of interest , as I love his stuff. He gave me some wonderful advice. “ It’s important that if you do the work then you put it out there either way. With putting it out , you will get better and your airing out your work.” The man is a Great Sage! He got me thinking again.
Thn, a couple of days later, I was listening to The Awesome Comics Podcast , as I do every Tuesday on my way to work. The ever informative and Martial arts expert Tony Esmond mentioned Substack. It sounded like some other thing I did not need to get involved with. Wrangling another app was just not going to cut it. Further inspection, though, gave me an idea. What if this was the place I could create my own corner of the internet for myself and people who want to listen to my ramblings. I’m even thinking of doing some rambling audio/ podcast attempts! Like a digital corner of the dansmonsters pub ( and yes , I know it sounds like Dance Monsters, but by the time I’d realised I was far to down the road) ,where I am the only one there, happily supping a pint and reading that Guy N Smith book. If anyone wants to join me for a pint, they are more than welcome!
So, your going to see my artwork here, Horror related or otherwise. I’m also going to continue the dansmonsters blog here, telling the tales of my influences and experiences that have helped create the thing I am today. This includes the reviews of the pulp trash novels I collect under the Library of Doom. I’m also going to be doing some of the Death/Doom/Black etc Metal music I have been collecting recently. The noise has been making me feel good!!!
Just so I am upfront, at first I'm going to be transferring the previous posts from the old blog and Book reviews over here, so apologies if you have seen some of the stuff before. I am going to add some extras, so I promise it will be worth it!
Hopefully, if this sounds like your kind of thing you’ll stick around. Let me know what you think!
This site will always be free, I’m not placing it behind a paywall. If you want to help, please visit my store and buy some goodies!!! I’m toying with the idea of Patreon , I’ll let you know. It will involve DIY fanzine stuff.
Why the name? It was an old blog where I had that had some of my short stories. I think I will move them onto here now.
Thanks again for joining, I’m raising a pint / mug of caffeine to you now! I can get some pickled eggs if you want.
All Hail the Grim Knights of the Doomlands Inn . Pint any one?
